World Tribal Day observed

JAMMU, Aug 9: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (World Tribal Day) was observed here today.
To observe the day, the speakers of a programme held in a virtual mode called for documentation of language, culture and other traditional knowledge and inheritance of nomadic tribes through community efforts.
Speaking on the occasion, noted Tribal researcher Dr. Javaid Rahi impressed upon tribal youths to raise awareness to protect the social, ethnic, economic and constitutional rights available to indigenous communities who are listed as Scheduled Tribes.
The speakers said that there is an urgent need to get tribal inheritance listed and documentation, conservation and dissemination programmes be initiated at national level by tribal communities on their own.
The programme was presided over by Ch Mohammad Farooq Bakerwal while Ishtiaq Misbah, Zulkarnain, Ch Ishtiaq, Mohammad Azhar and others also spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Political activist, Eshfaq-ur-Rehman Poswal, questioned the intentions of BJP Government in maintaining peace in the Indian subcontinent, while drawing the govt’s attention towards the miserable and pathetic condition of tribals.
In a press statement issued here on the occasion of International Tribal Day, Poswal said that on one hand Indian Government is holding negotiations with the Taliban and Afghanistan Government for ensuring peace in the Indian subcontinent but on the other hand the tribal communities of trouble torn Jammu and Kashmir are being ignored and neglected.
Poswal asked the Indian Government and the J&K Government to put in public domain the other steps taken right from block level for ensuring education, upliftment of tribal children and youth in other sectors besides ensuring development of the tribal communities.
