Addressing those who attended the program including industry’s tycoons, ex-chairmen, and other dignitaries, Romesh Khajuria, chairman WWEPC said, “WWEPC serves as the international face of Indian Woollen & Wool Blender Textiles, helping Indian exporters have a presence in the global market.”
He said while the woollen textile and clothing industry is not as big as the cotton and manmade fibre-based textiles and clothing industry, it plays a significant role in linking the rural economy with the manufacturing industry.
“The industry offers a diverse range of products, from textile intermediaries to finished textiles, garments, knitwear, blankets, carpets, and technical textiles. This industry also caters to civil and defense requirements for warmer clothing,” he said.
According to him, India exports woollen products to more than 150 countries worldwide. In 2021-22, he said, India exported woollen products worth USD 619 million, excluding woollen carpets, registering a growth of 24% over the previous year. “The total export of woollen products, including carpets, worsted yarns, and suiting, was USD 1.10 billion, with a growth rate of 25%,” he further said.
“The Government has taken various steps to develop the woollen industry, such as providing concessions on import duties on raw wool and textile machinery, offering subsidies under the TUF Scheme, MAI Scheme, and PLI Scheme, and approving seven PM Mitra Textile Parks to transform India’s textile sector and generate employment,” he added.
Khajuria said the WWEPC has played a dynamic role in promoting exports from India and maintaining business relations between India and foreign countries since its establishment in 1964.
Meanwhile, he thanked the Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Textiles, Piyush Goyal and officers of the ministry for their constant support in successful conduct of the program.
