Youth beaten to death in Akhnoor; family, neighbours protest

AKHNOOR, Apr 20: A 36-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by some youths when a scuffle broke out between them and the deceased’s younger brother during a friendly cricket match at village Karangi, about three to four kilometers from here.
According to SP Rural, Rajeev Pandey, yesterday some youth were playing a friendly cricket match at village Kirangi when a minor scuffle broke out between the bowler and the batsman over a minor issue. The scuffle took a bad turn when their supporters joined.
“In the mishap, three persons (including two of opposite party) were injured and one of them seriously. All the injured were shifted to Government Hospital Akhnoor, from where late night they were referred to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu. At about midnight, one of the injured who has been identified as Rakesh Kumar (36) son of Ajmer Singh, a resident of Karangi, succumbed to his injuries”, he added.
The deceased identified as Rakesh Kumar was the brother of the batsman who was attacked by the opponent team players. He was at his shop near the playground and joined the clash to protect his younger brother.
He said acting swiftly the Akhnoor police led by SHO Akhnoor, Inspector Kuldeep Kumar under the supervision of SDPO Akhnoor, Naresh Singh nabbed two of the accused and registered a case of murder against them.
However, this afternoon family members and neighbours of the deceased man staged a protest along with the deceased’s body at Fawarra Chowk and blocked Jammu-Poonch Highway for several hours demanding arrest of all the accused besides compensation and job forone of the deceased’s  family members.
The protest was called off when senior police officers assured them that all the accused will be arrested and the concerned MLA assured them of providing Government job to one of the family members of the deceased person.
