SRINAGAR, Sept 12: The Youth Congress today threatened to intensify agitation over Government’s failure to empower Panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir.
While addressing a press conference here, the National Secretary Youth Congress and Kashmir In-charge, Chetan Partap Singh and State President of Youth Congress, Mohammad Shahnawaz Choudhary, alleged that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has not taken their district level protest programme seriously and has failed to implement 73rd and 75th Amendments in the State Panchayat Raj Act.
The National Secretary Youth Congress said that they are now starting block level agitation across State against indifferent attitude of the State Government over implementing the amendments.
“During the block level, protests, seminars and information campaign would be started to inform the genuine rights of the Sarpanchs and Panchs so that they too will join in the agitation against State Government,” he said.
He also said that a memorandum would be handed over to Governor NN Vohra seeking extension of 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments in State Panchayat Raj Act.
Singh said that Congress Ministers, MLAs and senior leaders of the party will also be approached to implement the resolutions passed during the delegates’ session at SKICC few months back.
“During the delegation session, the important resolution of 73rd and 74th Amendments were passed in presence of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Prof Soz and other senior leaders of the party,” said Singh.
The Youth leaders claimed to have support of Congress high command on the issue and said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should be aware of this that they are not alone in this battle.
Shahnawaz Choudhary demanded that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah must come out with a white paper on the powers transferred to the Panchayats. He said until 73th and 74th Amendments are not implemented they will continue their agitation. He also said that their coalition partner is showing a rigid attitude over non implementation of amendments.
