JAMMU, Oct 2: A young soldier from border village of RS Pura belt of Jammu district gave supreme sacrifice for the nation as he attained martyrdom while giving befitting reply to the unprovoked Pakistan firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district yesterday.
As the mortal remains of Rifleman Shubham, wrapped in Tricolour flag, reached his native village Shakhian Chak, thousands of people lined up on both sides of the road in his village to receive the body and chanted slogans in praise of his sacrifice for the nation.

Emotional scenes were witnessed during the last rites as his close relatives opened the coffin to have his last glimpse, with his younger brother, expressing his desire to join armed forces to avenge his brother’s death. He lit the pyre as the body of the martyr was consigned to flames with full military honours. A contingent of Army jawans reversed their fire arms and fired in the air as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
Sharma (22) had joined the Army on 17 September 2016, and hailed from Shakhian Chak village of RS Pura belt in Jammu district and is survived by his father Vijay Sharma (a serving SI in J&K Armed Police), mother, two younger sisters and one younger brother.
Twenty-two-year-old Rifleman Shubam Sharma of 8 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles was among two Jawans who got martyrdom when Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Nowgam sector of frontier Kupwara district on Thursday morning.
J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina and several other senior BJP leaders including former Ministers Sham Choudhary and Gharu Ram participated in the funeral and paid tributes to the martyred soldier. SDM RS Pura Ram Lal Sharma SSP Jammu, Shridhar Patil, SP Headquarters Raja Adil Hamid and several other Government officials also paid tributes to the martyred soldier.
Speaking on the occasion, Ravinder Raina said that the nation and the people of J&K will never forget this supreme sacrifice of the young soldier. He said the martyred jawan will serve as an inspiration to other youth as he sacrificed his life for the cause of the nation.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also paid tributes to the martyred Army soldier. “Rifleman Shubam Sharma has laid down his life in the service of the nation. The nation is indebted by his sacrifice. We are proud of our Armed Forces and we stand strong in their support,” Sinha said in a statement.
